Summary of the Declaration

Democracy in America is under serious threat today, driven by an ideology that claims that this country is morally exceptional and that White Christians are called by God to dominate in all spheres of domestic and international life. We categorically reject this ideology.

1. Created in the image of God, all people have equal worth and dignity. We commit ourselves to the full acceptance of all people, regardless of caste, nation, sexual orientation, color or social status. We affirm the created world in all its diversity and vow to help preserve it from exploitation. We will work for social and environmental justice for all creation.

2. Affirming our faith in the one sovereign God of justice to whom belong "all the nations," we reject the conflation of national symbols with those of our faith. We will seek to remove flags from our sanctuary and nationalistic hymns from our songbooks. We oppose as idolatrous the ideology of Christian nationalism.

3. We understand the covenant of God with Abraham to be a blessing for "all the families of the earth." We reject all exclusivist claims to the Holy Land. The indiscriminate killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza is clearly genocide. We will work for a peaceful resolution of this crisis that will allow Israelis and Palestinians to live in security in the land of their ancestors.

4. Called to "love your neighbor as yourself," we commit ourselves to the establishment of an economy that allows the abundance of God's creation to be shared with equity by the whole human family. We reject any unholy alliance with an economic and political system that continues to exacerbate the increasing divide between the wealthy and the poor. We reject the misuse of religion to justify claims to dominion over others and abuse of the natural world. We reject any ideology that claims a divine call to control capital, dictate the rules of trade and ultimately dominate the world. We reject the toxic ideological blend of imperial capitalism and White Christian nationalism.
